How to wear summer pieces in the winter chill

I love the winter but hate that the cold tends to make me reach for my trusty joggers and stash away my summer favourites. So as 2011 was a year of being thrifty, this year I am making an effort to inject a bit of life into my winter wardrobe reusing some of my summer pieces. I dug out my favourite jumpsuit for a spot of Christmas shopping and made it winter friendly with some warm additions. The key is not too many heavy layers, the shops crank up the heating and you’ll melt, but choose one or two warm pieces to add to lightweight, summer fabrics.

Here are some tips for converting your summer favourites for winter:

  • Put leggings under maxi dresses and skirts and wear a cable knit jumper on top. You can pop a denim or plaid shirt over the top for extra warmth
  • Wear tights and boots under jumpsuits to counter the thin fabrics
  • Wear thick knitted tights with your denim or tailored shorts and add an oversized jumper to stay on trend
  • Wear a polo neck or long sleeve top under summer dresses, add plenty of jewellery to lift the look
  • Add knee high knitted socks to a tights and dress combo
  • Invest in a good pair of boots that go with both jeans and dresses, they’ll become a wardrobe staple
